The Career Skills Courses provides students with practical business, management and leadership skills that are necessary to be a business professional in the world of business globally.

BHLS’ philosophy is based on hands-on, real-life and practical education.

Career Skills Courses are based on ATHE’s portfolio of vocationally orientated and internationally recognised qualifications, which are offered through our partner, International Business School of Switzerland (IBAS).

Students can pick and choose courses from any level and build a portfolio of courses.

If a student wishes they can convert these individual courses into an international diploma.

Career Skills Courses are available on-campus or online via our learning platform, allowing students to study flexibly while balancing work and personal life.

Level 3 - Foundational Level Courses

Course Descriptions:

  • Managing Business Operations
    • This course aims to introduce students to key aspects of all businesses and how they operate within the wider business environment, as well as internally. Students will explore the important business areas of finance, customer service, planning, decision making and operational control.
  • Maximizing Resources to Achieve Business Success
    • Effective use of resources can be business critical. This course aims to ensure students understand the range of resources businesses need, why this must be monitored and how this can be achieved through technology and other project management tools.
  • The Business Environment
    • All businesses operate within a wider business environment –of which they must be constantly aware. This course aims to introduce students to all aspects of that external environment and how an organisation may choose to ‘position itself’ through marketing or its ethical image. The course also considers the impact of culture on organisations.
  • Managing People in Organizations
    • People are often considered to be the most important resource in any organisation. This course will give students the knowledge and understanding about recruitment, performance management and development.
  • Working in Teams
    • Introduces students to the skills of teamwork. Students will explore the features of an effective team, motivation and leadership and the importance of delegating, influencing and developing excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Effective Business Communication
    • Good communication skills are critical to all those working in business. In this course students will explore the written and oral skills that are needed in a variety of business contexts.

Level 4 - Pre-Bachelor Courses

Course Descriptions:

  • Business Environment
    • This course will develop students’ understanding of the national and global business environment and the internal and external circumstances in which different organisations operate.
  • People in Organisations
    • This course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of those aspects of organisations that concern and support people. This includes communication practices, teamwork, remote working and other organisational structures.
  • Communication Skills for Business
    • This course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the communication practices within organisations and students are introduced to the different modes and channels of communication used in organisations.
  • Administrative Services
    • Students will be able to develop knowledge and understanding of the range of administrative services that might be offered to managers or departments within organisations.
  • Resource Management
    • The aim of this course is to provide an overview of the human and physical resources needed in a range of organisations, including those in the primary, service and manufacturing sectors.
  • Managing a Work-Based Team Project
    • This course aims to develop project management skills for a work-based team project by implementing the different stages of project development, implementation and review.
  • Customer Relationship Management
    • Students will be able to develop knowledge and understanding of the scope and importance of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and to explore how effective CRM is achieved.
  • Financial and Management Accounting Techniques for Managers
    • To develop a knowledge and understanding of fundamental financial and management accounting techniques that are used by managers in organisations and to develop skills enabling students to apply these techniques.

Level 5 - Bachelor Level Courses

Course Descriptions:

  • Business Organisations in a Global Context
    • This course examines the principles and practice of corporate governance. It investigates the role governance plays in ensuring that a company’s business operations are compliant with accepted governance principles and the relevant Codes of Practice.
  • Managing Communication
    • This course aims to develop knowledge and understanding of communication within and between organisations. Students will also review their own communication skills in an organisational context.
  • People Management
    • This course will enable students to understand how to manage individuals and teams. They will study organisational factors and how these impact on and influence individual and team behaviour, as well as learning management tools and techniques to help them effectively manage individuals and teams.
  • Marketing Principles & Practice
    • To develop knowledge and understanding of general marketing principles and their application in business.
  • Planning a New Business Venture
    • This course will develop knowledge and understanding of new business ventures and skills associated with planning a venture. By studying this unit, students will develop an understanding of business types and the factors that determine the success or otherwise of a new business venture. They will also learn how to determine the market potential of a new business and develop an associated business plan.
  • Business Ethics
    • This course will enable the student to develop knowledge and understanding of business ethics and the effects ethics can have on organisations, including planning and the management of their goals and activities.
  • Finance for Managers
    • The course aims to equip students with the knowledge and understanding of the sources and use of finance in organisations and how to evaluate and interpret financial data.
  • Research Project (Level 5)
    • The aim of this course is to develop the skills required for the student to formulate an appropriate research question and to design and undertake a research project to answer that research question. The student will also need to interpret the outcomes of their research and present them to an audience.

    • The aim of this course is to enable the student to understand the role of leadership and management in organisations; and the use of leadership and management skills to improve organisational performance.
  • Research Project (Level 6)
    • The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to produce a research question and carry out independent research using appropriate research techniques. The student will analyse and present their research findings, evaluate the research methodology and their personal learning.
  • Managing Quality and Service Delivery
    • To enable learners to develop the knowledge and understanding required to manage and deliver excellent customer service.
  • Personal Leadership and Management Development
    • This course aims to help student develop their own personal leadership and management skills to support the achievement of organisational objectives and personal progression.
  • Financial Decision Making for Managers
    • Students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills required to make financial decisions to meet business needs.
  • Accounting
    • The course will enable students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in financial and management accounting.
  • Managing Finance in the Public Sector
    • The students will develop knowledge and understanding of finance and accountability in the public sector.
  • Economics for Business
    • To provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the economic environment and its impact on how businesses operate.
  • Factors Determining Marketing Strategies
    • This course enables students to understand the influences on marketing strategy and the characteristics and use of marketing intelligence. It also involves the underpinning principles of strategic marketing analysis, strategic choice and stakeholder engagement.
  • Marketing Communications
    • This course enables students to understand the principles, practice and components of integrated marketing communications and how they are used to optimize marketing messages, including the use of digital media. Students will be able to develop an integrated marketing communications plan.
  • Sales
    • To provide students with knowledge and understanding of sales and the principles and practices of professional selling in the business environment.
  • Branding
    • To enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of branding and its impact on the success of organisations.
  • Management Information Systems
    • To enable students to examine the use of information systems within organisations. The students will develop knowledge and understanding of the contribution information systems make to the development and management of organisations.
  • Managing Change
    • The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to manage change within an organisation. Students will develop an understanding of the need for managing change and the different models that can be used to support this process.
  • Risk Management
    • The aim of this course is to help students develop knowledge and understanding of the importance of managing risks in business organisations and enable them to develop an effective risk management plan.
  • Project Management
    • The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the process of identifying appropriate and feasible projects. Student will also understand how the projects can be planned and monitored in order to achieve business objectives.
  • Human Resource Management
    • The aim of this course is to develop knowledge understanding and skills in human resource management and consider contemporary issues that affect human resource management within organisations.

    • The aim of this course is to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required to carry out research to meet the needs of strategic business management.
  • Organisational Behaviour
    • The aim of this course is to help students develop an understanding of how organisational behaviour, structure, culture, motivation, creativity and leadership impact on an organisation’s effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Personal Development for Leadership and Strategic Management
    • This course aims to help students develop their own personal leadership and management skills in the context of the creation and achievement of organisational vision and strategic direction.
  • International Business Environment
    • The course will enable students to explore the changing international business environment and develop knowledge and understanding of how organisations respond.
  • Developing Organisational Vision and Strategic Direction
    • To enable students to improve their knowledge and understanding of how organisations develop vision and strategic direction. The course may be of particular interest for students aiming for leadership roles in either private or public sector organisations.
  • Human Resource Management
    • To develop skills and knowledge in the field of human resource management strategy. To look at contemporary issues which affect human resource strategy within organisations.
  • Project Management
    • To understand the process of identifying appropriate and feasible projects, and to be able to initiate and start a project. To be able to manage, monitor and control a project, including assessing, managing and controlling project risks and issues, project and team management and change management. To be able to evaluate the success or failure of a project.
  • Strategic Resource Management
    • To explore the mechanisms for managing resources to achieve the business objectives of organisations. To understand the roles and strategies used in acquiring, managing, and developing human, physical and technological resources. To understand the importance of marketing in achieving business aims and objectives, and the roles, strategies and processes used to manage the marketing function.
  • Risk Management
    • To raise business risk awareness and develop knowledge and understanding in the assessment, monitoring and control of business risks. To enable the student to develop an appreciation of the implications of business risks.
  • Managing Stakeholder Engagement
    • The aim of the course is to enable the student to develop the knowledge and understanding required to engage with stakeholders and to learn how to manage stakeholders in projects and organisations.
  • Corporate Communication Strategies
    • To understand the importance of corporate communication and how it links to corporate objectives. To conduct an audit internal and external corporate communications, and to be able to develop an effective corporate communications strategy.
  • Leading Organisational Equality and Diversity
    • The aim of this course is to enable the student to develop an understanding of the importance of managing equality and diversity within the organisation and to understand how to lead the approach to equality and diversity within an organisation.
  • Sustainable Business Strategy
    • To raise awareness of sustainable development issues and how they impact on the strategic development of the business.
  • Managing Quality and Service Delivery
    • This course aims to introduce the student to the delivery of excellent customer service. The student will also develop knowledge and understanding required for quality measurement and management of service delivery (for public service or healthcare management programs the course can be delivered in context).
  • International Finance
    • The course will allow students to consider the importance of International Accounting Standards and the international financial environment for decision making within businesses and organisations. Particular attention is paid to analysing the role of international financial markets in creating opportunities and risks for organisations, especially those operating in a multinational context. Students will gain experience in assessing strategic options and making appropriate recommendations.
  • Quantitative Methods
    • This course will enable students to further develop understanding and skills in the application of quantitative methods appropriate to support decision-taking in organisations.
  • Strategic Marketing
    • This course enables students to develop knowledge and understanding of marketing at a strategic level and how this is applied in practice including developing a marketing strategy.
  • Corporate Communication Strategies
    • This course will enable students to develop knowledge and understanding of the importance of corporate communications and the link with corporate objectives. Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in auditing corporate communications and planning a corporate communication strategy.
  • Strategic Human Resource Management
    • The aim of this course is to help students acquire knowledge and understanding of human resource management strategy and its impact on the efficiency of an organisation.
  • Managing Continuous Organisational Improvement
